The Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery and Juxtapoz magazine are pleased to present new works by Robert Williams in SLANG Aesthetics! in conjunction with 20 Years Under the Influence of Juxtapoz, a group exhibition by guest curators Andrew Hosner of Thinkspace Gallery and Gary Pressman of Copro Gallery. Both exhibitions will be on view at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery from February 22nd to April 19th, 2015. These two exhibitions commemorate the 20th anniversary of Juxtapoz magazine, founded by Williams in 1994, and it’s vast influence on several generations of artists.

Screen Shot 2015-02-12 at 1.29.19 PM

Juxtapoz magazine allowed Robert Williams to create a platform for this young and insurgent energy on the West Coast and, with its unprecedented success, Williams became widely upheld as the godfather of the lowbrow and pop surrealist art movements. His first major body of work to debut in Los Angeles in well over a decade, SLANG! Aesthetics will feature 25 new oil paintings by the artist alongside a suite of drawings and a series of large-scale sculptures fabricated with the assistance of Gentle Giant Studios.

Screen Shot 2015-02-12 at 1.51.45 PM

What once began as an alternative magazine, Juxtapoz is now the most widely disseminated art publication in the world. Predicated on the rejection of the artificial boundaries that kept “high” art removed from popular culture, Juxtapoz effectively broke down those walls to allow young artists a chance at their own history.

Lucent Dossier heads in a powerful new direction with Unleash Your Legend. This new show is inspired by the troupe’s recent Cotton Club-style production for The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, which exhibited a strong urban and street feel. With the addition of new members, Lucent Dossier’s troupe configuration now features incredible Los Angeles battle dancers that incorporate a multitude of dance styles: crunking, breaking, voguing, bone-breaking, hip-hop, and parkour.

Today, scientists make a career out of asking big questions about our world. They research and hypothesize, design experiments to prove or demolish assumptions, and argue their point of view — and they do it with a disciplined rigor. But there are also great scientists like Benjamin Franklin, Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin and Henry David Thoreau who approached science not as a job but a hobby, as they pursued understanding of how the world works. Attend First Fridays at the National History Museum to learn more and enjoy science by night!

Screen Shot 2015-02-03 at 4.43.48 PM

Today, with technology, social media, crowdsourcing and the resurgence of the DIY movement, a general public of science enthusiasts — anybody with a passion for adventure and inquiry — can participate in the journey of discovery.

Screen Shot 2015-02-03 at 4.43.34 PM

What would happen if science was our common language and part of our everyday vocabulary? Instead of a select few, what could a thousand pairs of eyes add to the discovery of a new comet? How could hundreds of people across the country help paint a clearer picture of species diversity?  With the rise of the “citizens” and the “scientists” working collaboratively, we can revolutionize and redefine scientific exploration. Join the National History Museum this season as they hear from the makers, doers and dreamers who are creating tomorrow’s scientific community today.

The Walt Disney Concert Hall in Downtown of Los Angeles is the fourth hall of the Los Angeles Music Center and was designed by Frank Gehry. It opened on October 24, 2003. Bounded by Hope Street, Grand Avenue, and 1st and 2nd Streets, it seats 2,265 people and serves, among other purposes, as the home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic orchestra and the Los Angeles Master Chorale. The hall is in a vineyard seating configuration, similar to the Berliner Philharmonie by Hans Scharoun.

Lillian Disney made an initial gift of $50 million in 1987 to build a performance venue as a gift to the people of Los Angeles and a tribute to Walt Disney’s devotion to the arts and to the city. The Frank Gehry-designed building opened on October 24, 2003. Both Gehry’s architecture and the acoustics of the concert hall, designed by Yasuhisa Toyota, have been praised, in contrast to its predecessor, the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.
