Who wouldn’t want to eat a hot dog or burger in a train car on the Sunset strip in LA? With all the hype about their food, I couldn’t help but stop in for a quick bite and the burger-in-train-car experience.
Carney’s is a family owned casual fast food restaurant that serves burgers and hot dogs in a 1920’s Amtrak passenger car. They pride themselves on serving some of the best hamburgers and hot dogs in LA. They boast that they use the freshest ingredients on the market and have never skimped on quality. And what a great location!
Carney’s was founded in 1975 by John Wolfe, Sr. and his wife Pat Wolfe. Together they worked countless hours building the restaurant into a Sunset Strip destination. In a time when hamburger establishments were popping up all over the place, John chose to build a restaurant out of an old Pacific Railroad passenger train.
Being a former radio executive, he understood the importance of lasting impressions and being different. Not only was John good at publicity but he could also cook amazing burgers and hot dogs. John knew that by building a portable restaurant that if anything were to happened to their Sunset Strip lease, they could simply pick up and move their business elsewhere.
Needless to say, the business is still around today and it has become quite the LA Landmark. In 1981 Carney’s decided to add another location on Ventura Blvd in Studio City.
Their menu is extensive, but people mainly come here for their burgers, dogs, and chili. Their hot dogs have won awards, and there’s a sign in the restaurant that says they won the title for “best hot dogs in LA 2007”. My friend and I ordered what I call the trifecta; cheeseburger, hot dog, and chili cheese fries. The familiar concert of fat, salt, and starch came together wonderfully and the lemonade was refreshing. Of all three, the burger was the most tasty. They also offer tacos and wraps. Check out their menu here.
Los Angeles is a culture of cars and landmarks, Carney’s is no exception to both. So, take a trip down to the Sunset strip and enjoy a classic burger or hot dog on a classic train.
