Follow Up: Descanso Gardens Getaway

April 9, 2012 — Leave a comment

This past weekend I visited the Descanso Gardens with a group of friends. The Gardens are located right off the Glendale Freeway in a residential neighborhood. There is plenty of parking and beautiful trees line the lot. I recommend bringing water and don’t forget your camera; there are plenty of picturesque scenes and memories to capture and upload to your favorite social media.

We started our adventure at the Visitor’s Center where we picked up a map and  familiarized ourselves with the Gardens layout. We started at the Rose Pavilion and worked our way up to the lake and bird observation deck where we watched turtles swim and sun bath. The Pavilion is littered with gazebos, benches, fountains, and beautiful flowers.

There is also a children’s maze located in the Pavilion and lots of places to sit and ponder. We took that opportunity for a group picture.

After exploring the Oak Forest we worked our way down to the Japanese Garden and Tea House. This is probably one of the more popular places and for good reason. The house is tucked into the garden under large Oak Trees and a gentle stream flows though. This is also a good place to take a break from the heat and take some shade.

Next we visited the historic Boddy House and the Sturt Haaga Gallery that features a Vertical Garden. From here you get a good view of the valley and surrounding mountains.

After our garden adventure, we stopped in at Café Descanso, located near the Gardens entrance. The Café provides a relaxing outdoor patio and offers sandwiches, salads, dessert, kids fare, beverages, and luncheon specials such as the ‘Nature’s Table’ meals which include freshly picked vegetables and herbs right from the Descanso Gardens. The  Café is open daily (except Christmas) from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. To view the current menu, click here.

The Descanso Gardens are a great getaway destination for the whole family to enjoy. I recommend visiting and exploring this beautiful and educational garden; a hidden jewel in Los Angeles where you can unwind and take in natures bounty.
