Sunday Funday Ride

October 27, 2014 — Leave a comment

Organized by Santa Monica Spoke, LACBC, and CalBike Board member Cynthia Rose, this ride will be a little different from other Sunday Funday Rides, as they will be riding up the Pacific Coast Highway to meet with the CalBike‘s California by Bike Tour Surf N Turf. They’ll ride to Nicolas Canyon Beach where they will join CalBike for lunch ($10 catered lunch or bring your own). Snacks will be provided.

After lunch they will ride as a group back to the Santa Monica Pier where they are planning a Happy Hour nearby where all are invited!

This is not a roadie race; they will travel at an easy pace but ask riders to stay focused and make the effort to keep the group together. Use your judgement if you think you can make this trip. Please do not hesitate to inquire if you have questions or concerns. There is the option to return on Metro 534 from Trancas (4.3 miles from south of Nicolas Beach lunch stop). Because of the route, children cannot participate unless they are attached to adult rider bike or they are capable of keeping up a reasonable pace.

CivLAvia: Heart Of LA

September 18, 2013 — Leave a comment

CicLAvia: Heart of LA returns to the streets that started it all, explore downtown Los Angeles on bike, foot, stroller, and many more creative means of locomotion. The Heart of LA route follows in the footsteps of their first five events and helps Angelenos rediscover the origins of the City of Angels. Whether you’ve ridden these streets before or are new to CicLAvia, the Heart of LA route promises something new to discover.

CicLAvia makes the streets safe for people to walk, skate, play, and ride a bike. There are activities along the route. Shop owners and restaurants are encouraged to open their doors to people along the CicLAvia route.

Have a problem with your bike? Stop by any one of the five hubs along the route to see a bike technician… for free! However, please make sure to service your bike prior to coming to CicLAvia. Our free bike repair is only for minor repairs: tire pumping, popped chains, etc. Please do not come to CicLAvia expecting to get a full service repair.

All pedestrians are welcome at CicLAvia. You may either walk in the streets to the right of the bicyclists or on the sidewalks. If you’re in the street, stay to the right and move to the sidewalk if you feel that there are too many bicycles in the street at any given time.

Ciclovías started in Bogotá, Colombia, over thirty years ago as a response to the congestion and pollution of city streets. Now they happen throughout Latin America and the United States, connecting communities and giving people a break from the stress of car traffic. The health benefits are immense. Ciclovías bring families outside of their homes to enjoy the streets, our largest public space in the city.

In Los Angeles we need CicLAvia more than ever. Our streets are congested with traffic, our air is polluted with toxic fumes, our children suffer from obesity and other health conditions caused by the scarcity of public space and safe, healthy transportation options. CicLAvia creates a temporary park for free, simply by removing cars from city streets. It creates a network of connections between our neighborhoods and businesses and parks with corridors filled with fun.
