This year, Brokechella will host festival mainstay and LA Weekly top live bands finalist, electronic folk duo yOya and fellow returning acts “bi-polar-folk”-blues group Kera & the Lesbians, and Echo Park garage pop fan favorite LA Font. Alongside eight acts new to the cARTel stage, these Los Angeles must-hears represent a variety of the city’s most thriving musical movements. For 2014, they welcome a host of international acts via their brand-new World Initiative, including Swiss trash-pop iTunes chart topper ZIBBZ. The cARTel Stage will also host shoegaze pop/folk collective Hott MT, former opener for the Flaming Lips; electronic trio drawing from Chicago classic soul and experimental psychedelia Greenhorse; dark, dreamy female fronted rock band Dark Furs; ambitious surfer rock via Francisco The Man; glam-blues power pop rockers The Singles; harmony driven disco-synth dance group Vibes; and the rhythmic indie pop newcomers StaG.

This years festival wide aesthetic theme is Broke Kingdom, which will take form in a variety of prominent ways. Art Alley, consisting of seven Gallery artists hanging paintings, photography, and installations; graffiti tagged “Thrones” (discarded lawn or arm chairs) to be used as a photo op; a Sound Fort where the listener can put on headphones and experience an enhanced audio version of our Brokechella sound; an indoor wall permanently muraled with an Augmented Street Tag by a professional graffiti artist brought to life by an app on your phone; a lounge with a 60 minute film loop called the Not-So-Silent Movie Theater, created by 5 Second Films; an artist using the vibration from the subwoofer during every cARTel stage performance to create a one of kind Painting with Sound piece for each band; a Giggle Dome of multicolored light prisms, illuminated in an otherwise dark hallway, paired with joyful soundscaping to provide a temporary reprieve from an otherwise audacious fest; Interactive Print Making, where fest guests are invited to make and buy their own prints in collaboration with a visual artist; Projection Mapping on to a variety of balloons attached to a wall, and our Broke Castle, painted live throughout the festival.

Brokechella

A music fest for the rest of us: Brokechella returns with its 3rd edition in the heart of downtown Los Angeles to once again serve all of those who don’t have the dough for a weekend in the desert. Don’t miss what the LA Times recognized as the community experience that skips “the mortal terror of your credit card statement [at other festivals]” and “revels in staying at home.” Doubling in size year to year, Brokechella 2013 is sure to yet again swarm with a giant crowd, the best of acts from LA and beyond, mouth-watering eats, and surprises galore!

Last year’s Main Stage featured Infantree, LA Font, Rumspringa, Big Moves, and yOya, among others. Inside, bands played all day to packed crowds, while DJs led an army of dance fiends at the Jarritos stage outside. Come be a part of the oh-so-cheap magic!

Since cARTel was in its infancy, one of its most regular and beloved events was known as Community Pool. Bands, comedians, and variety acts would come together to share their talents with fellow Los Angeles artists. The event grew more and more popular over the years, consistently outgrowing its venue. What started at a coffee-house in Venice soon moved to a black box theater in Westwood, then to a multi-story club Downtown that could hold two stages, and finally to a giant warehouse space in Downtown LA.

So how did it become Brokechella? In 2011 when planning their Spring Community Pool, they realized it was falling on the same weekend as Coachella. Not a group to shy away from a challenge, they decided to embrace it, and welcomed 400 people into the very first Brokechella held at the Airliner downtown. Food trucks, face painting, fantastic art, and all for a measly $5 price tag. For a while, they continued the Broke Concert Series at the Airliner, with BrokeSmash in the summer and BrokeBeast around Halloween, then decided to focus solely on Brokechella and making it *the* place to be in Los Angeles during Coachella’s second weekend.
