For the first time in Los Angeles—The California Science Center in cooperation with the Israel Antiquities Authority is proud to present the largest Dead Sea Scrolls exhibition ever mounted outside of Israel, featuring over 600 ancient artifacts on display. This special exhibition explores the science and significance of the Dead Sea Scrolls, manuscripts written and hidden in caves 2000 years ago and not discovered until 1947. The exhibition also features sections from 10 selections of the Dead Sea Scrolls, more than half never seen before in the U.S., including parts of the oldest known copies of the Hebrew Bible, also known as the Old Testament.
Through multimedia exhibits, guests will explore the science and technology used to date these ancient manuscripts, decipher them, and preserve them for future generations. Additional highlights include a three-ton stone from Jerusalem’s Western Wall, limestone capitals from the first temple period (1000-586 BCE), ossuaries from the early Roman period, and an ancient signature preserved for millennia on the Archer Seal.
Interactive exhibits invite guests to experience the science of the Scrolls in a new way. Practice writing in Hebrew and Greek, feel the difference between papyrus and parchment, explore how carbon dating helps scientists determine the age of the Scrolls, and reconstruct a ceramic pot by matching fragments like restorers do.
Soar high above the ancient city of Jerusalem — a city of many religions and an important crossroads of civilization. After being granted special permission in the region’s strict no-fly zone, filmmakers were able to capture the first-ever large format aerial footage of the Old City and throughout the Holy Land.
Through breathtaking aerial footage, eye-opening personal stories and remarkable historical perspective, Jerusalem takes viewers inside the heart of the ancient city in ways never seen before. This inspiring film also features exclusive footage that will take you to the Western Wall, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Dome of the Rock, and much more.

Yuri’s Night is a global celebration of humanity’s past, present, and future in space. Parties and events are held around the world every April in commemoration of April 12, 1961, the day of cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin’s first manned spaceflight, and April 12, 1981, the inaugural launch of NASA’s Space Shuttle.
Yuri’s Night events combine space-themed partying with education and outreach. These events can range from an all-night mix of techno and technology at a NASA Center, to a movie showing and stargazing at your local college, to a gathering of friends at a bar or barbecue.
For over 10 years, Yuri’s Night has celebrated achievements with a global space-themed party that transcends nationality and involves hundreds of events in dozens of countries. In 2011, the 50th anniversary of human spaceflight, over 100,000 people attended 567 officially recognized events in 75 countries on all 7 continents, while tens of thousands more watched the 12-hour live Yuri’s Night Global Webcast and participated online in the virtual world of Second Life.
In 1961, Russian Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin shocked the world when he became the first human to orbit the Earth, landing safely in his Vostok-1 Capsule. The space race was in high gear. Twenty years later to the day in 1981, NASA launched the Space Shuttle program’s first orbital flight. They happened on opposite sides of the space race, but they share a date: April 12th.
VIP guest list includes featured speaker former ISS astronaut Garrett Reisman, moonwalker Buzz Aldrin, and a Cosmonaut sent to hang with us by Roscosmos. Planetary Radio and SpaceVidCast will be at the event and the Astronaut DJ will spin some epic tunes!
VIP tickets allow you to join at 8:00 pm for speakers and to rub elbows with VIP guests. Regular tickets let you get there at 9:00 pm and rock the night away with glow sticks, awesome costumes, and more mylar than an interstellar probe! Space is limited (well, not outer space but the pavilion has a capacity limit) and tickets are going fast! To grab your chance at this once in a lifetime event check out the registration.

The west coast premiere of Cleopatra: The Search for the Last Queen of Egypt, featuring the largest collection of its kind ever assembled, was a historic and enlightening exhibit. More than 150 priceless artifacts illuminating the life of Cleopatra VII, one of the most provocative and powerful women in history, including colossal statues, jewelry, coins, and handwritten notes from her lost palace in Alexandria are on display at the California Science Center.
The story of her life and time unfolds in a dramatic setting with high definition multimedia and original soundscapes, including a complimentary audio tour, provided to you, making the exhibition a rich, multisensory experience. A 4-minute movie opens the exhibition. You are introduced to the parallel stories of Dr. Zahi Hawass and Franck Goddio, who are leading searches for Cleopatra VII from the sands of Egypt to the depths of the Mediterranean Sea.
As soon as the movie ends, you encounter a statue of a Ptolemaic queen, perhaps Cleopatra. You also begin your audio tour, provided to you as part of the exhibition experience and narrated by the “voice of Cleopatra,” who leads you through her life and times.
In this gallery, you are transported to the site of the ruins of ancient Alexandria, lost beneath the sea centuries ago. Here, Franck Goddio is leading an underwater excavation to recover artifacts from Cleopatra’s empire. Beneath the walkway, you can see amphora from the 5th Century B.C. along with other artifacts.
Cleopatra immerses you in the experience of two present-day searches, on both land and sea, for the elusive queen. The most dominant artifacts in this gallery space are two 16-foot tall colossal figures of a Ptolemaic king and queen from the Temple of Amon at Heracleion.
The artifacts weigh in at about 30 tons in total.
Upon exiting, you gaze upon a larger-than-life headless sculpture of a female body, dressed as the goddess Isis that represents a queen from the Ptolemaic period.
To enhance the your experience during the run of Cleopatra, the Science Center IMAX Theater will be featuring Mysteries of Egypt. The National Geographic film transports you to a distant time and place with spectacular imagery and a compelling story.
Beginning May 23, Mysteries of Egypt will show daily at 10:30 am, 1:30 and 3:30 pm, with additional shows Saturday and Sunday at 5:30 pm. Combo tickets for the exhibition and Mysteries of Egypt or any IMAX film are available.
The final gallery is devoted to images of Cleopatra through the years in art and popular culture. Artists have tried to capture the essence of Cleopatra in a multitude of art forms throughout history, from paintings to films. But so far, the real last queen of Egypt has eluded everyone.
