The Norton Simon Museum is known around the world as one of the most remarkable private art collections ever assembled. Over a 30-year period, 20th-century industrialist Norton Simon (1907–1993) amassed an astonishing collection of European art from the Renaissance to the 20th century and a stellar collection of South and Southeast Asian art spanning 2,000 years.
Modern and Contemporary Art from Europe and the United States, acquired by the former Pasadena Art Museum, also occupies an important place in the Museum’s collections.
The Museum houses more than 12,000 objects, roughly 1,000 of which are on view in the galleries and gardens. Two temporary exhibition spaces feature rotating installations of artworks not on permanent display. The Museum’s online collections database presents a portion of the objects in the permanent collection, and is continually being updated.
The Patina-operated Garden Café is the perfect place to enjoy lunch or a snack during your visit to the Norton Simon Museum. Located in the Museum’s celebrated and serene sculpture garden, the café offers daily specials and a variety of fresh salads, sandwiches, baked goods and beverages.
The Norton Simon Museum promotes the knowledge and understanding of the visual arts to a diverse audience. Whether your preference is for small, informal discussions with staff educators, lectures by renowned scholars and curators or drawing classes led by local artists, the Museum invites you to experience the richness of the collections in many different ways.
Enjoy family friendly programs that introduce children and adults to the wonderful world of art and spark the creative spirit in kids of all ages.
