German Christmas Market

November 25, 2013 — Leave a comment

In Germany you can find Christmas Markets in every city from North to South and East to West and open for as long as a month. Most of the markets are located in the center of the city around the city hall, on the regular marketplace, or around churches and cathedrals. Berlin alone boasts more than 50 Christmas markets! In the big cities you can visit the market daily for 30 straight days.

BluCats Events is bringing the spirit of this German Christmas Market tradition to Southern California and are holding the annual Christmas Holiday Market in Huntington Beach at the Old World Village.

Every German Christmas Market has its own history. In Germany, the whole month of December is dedicated to the Christmas tradition. One of these traditions is the Christmas Market. It started in the 14th century when toy makers, wood sculptures, bread bakers and other crafters got the permission to sell their goods on the regular market place before Christmas. Since then it’s became a tradition in almost every German city, big or small. These early Christmas markets also sold food such as roasted almonds, chestnuts, and other nuts. It was a market where people could find useful things and culinary specialties.

Up to 50 artists, crafters, and vintage vendors have been selected to attend from OC and LA. Take Photos with Santa Claus, get your face painted, and create a Christmas tree ornament. The Old World Village is a charming European Village with small streets where you can find some nice stores and services. There are murals on each building and there is also a cute German chapel plus the Old World Restaurant.

Enjoy original European and German specialties like Bratwurst, Curry-Wurst, Potato pancakes, Lentil Soup, Goulash, original German Cookies and Pastries, hot chocolate, coffee and tea, Kinderpunch, German beer and wine, and the famous “Gluhwein” (red mulled wine). The popular food truck FamousGermanBratwurst will take care of some food specialties, and of course the Old World Restaurant.

Mr. Events.

The Tomato Battle unifies as many as 5,000 fruit-chucking fanatics for an afternoon of dancing to music, sipping libations, and flinging 300,000 pounds of Roma tomatoes at one another. Mosh in a ketchup-covered fray that marries the traditions of Spain’s La Tomatina tomato-throwing festival and Germany’s Oktoberfest.

Festivities commence at noon with registration and opening, followed by live entertainment and a costume contest. At 4:00 p.m., soldiers donning bathing suits, safety goggles, and well-treaded shoes converge on piles of past-ripe tomatoes and set about pelting people with fruits like sentient apple trees avenging the initial-carving of amorous teenagers.

Beats and beer flow until past 7 p.m., when ruddy troops lay down their arms and rinse themselves clean of pulp and juice. An extra set of clothes is highly recommended.
