Vintage autos from the early 20th century through the 1960s will be on display as Heritage Square Museum presents its annual Vintage Automobile and Classic Car Show. Car aficionados will view a wide variety of autos from around the globe here at the Victorian Square. Visitors of all ages will marvel over the engineering and quality of various car styles from the Model T to the early hot rods of the 1950s and beyond.

The event will also feature vintage machinery, Indian motorcycles, and other surprises to be announced in the coming weeks. The combination of vintage machines and period architecture is an opportunity for lovers of both to come together for a fun-filled day.

The museum is excited to announce that Nick Federoff will be an exhibitor at the event. Since 1988, Nick has been reaching out to folks across the country to be “green.” Nick hosts two national award-winning radio shows, “Nick Federoff on Gardening” and the “Things Green Garden Minute.” This quest for helping others has earned him the title of America’s Master Natural Gardener. Nick will be displaying his history of lawn equipment exhibit, which will feature items such as vintage lawn mowers.

Food will be provided by Rounds Premium Burgers via their Rounds Burger Truck. Founded in 2011, Rounds is a fun, new twist on the classic American burger stand, offering a flavorful selection of classic fare, recreated to be uniquely Rounds.

Heritage Square Museum is a living history museum that explores the settlement and development of Southern California from the Civil War to the early 20th Century, offering visitors a look into the everyday lives of Southern Californians at the close of the 19th Century.

Soirées Mystique At The Perry Mansion

The Heritage Square Museum presents Soirées Mystique – an evening of Victorian Enchantment. The show combines magic, mind-reading, and mysticism to deliver the most unique experience around for an intimate setting of only 30 individuals. Guests will be treated, in an authentic environment, to a captivating evening of exceptional entertainment.

19th century conjuror and clairvoyant Victor Ian Élan will take participants on a journey back in time when wealthy patrons would regularly invite magicians, mind-readers, and mediums into their Victorian drawing rooms to amuse and amaze intimate gatherings of friends and invited guests. In those sophisticated, intimate surroundings, the parlor became the stage, and the audiences, thoroughly enthralled and entertained, looked on in wonderment, mere inches from the show.

Victor Ian Élan, 19th Century Conjuror and Clairvoyant is a Southern California-based performer of magical and psychic entertainment who appears regularly at private parties, corporate events and charity galas. Currently, he is the creator and producer of the show Soirées Mystique which is currently being presented at the Perry Mansion house.

Heritage Square audience members will witness this unique style of performance that takes participants on a journey back in time. Before their eyes and inside their minds, sitters witness demonstrations in 19th century conjuring, observe experiments in Victorian mind-reading, and even participate in an authentic antebellum spirit séance show.

Follow Up: Heritage Square Museum

The Victorian Era was a long period of peace, prosperity, refined sensibilities and national self-confidence. Strolling through the Heritage Square Museum this past weekend aroused those feelings as I was transported to this elegant time period. The museum is set in a tranquil neighborhood and the homes are beautiful; each has its own character and story.

The Heritage Square Museum is a living history museum that explores the settlement and development of Southern California from the Civil War to the early 20th Century, offering you a look into the everyday lives of Southern Californians at the close of the 19th Century.

Guided Tours

I definitely recommend taking a guided tour, I learned a lot and got a good lay of the land. Tours explore the outside and inside to the museum homes and provide insight into the life and people of the time. Visit on the weekend and the guides dress in period attire. Guided tours depart hourly between 12 and 3 pm from the Palms Depot.

The Heritage Square Museum offers a unique learning experience and family friendly events throughout the year.

6th Annual Lummis Day – Join the Arroyo Community as they celebrate the life and legacy of Charles Lummis and the historic Arroyo Seco. Begins at 12:30 pm.

Saturday, June 9
Vintage Automobile and Classic Car Show – Bring your Dad or favorite care enthusiast to enjoy an up-close look at rare and beautiful crafted automobiles over a 40 year time span, from the Model T to the 1950’s hotrods. Free for Museum members and $10 for the general public. Begins at 11 am to 4 pm.

Saturdays, July 21 and 28, and August 4
Silent and Classic Movie Nights – Picnic on the lawn while viewing classic and silent movies. Free for Museum members and $10 for the general public. Featured films TBD. Begins at 7:30 pm.

Saturday, August 18
3rd Annual Square Dancing with Triple Chicken Foot – Join Triple Chicken Foot for an Old Time American Square Dance, as well as a great summer fruit pie baking contest. Beginners are encouraged, this is a family friendly dance. Join for a beautiful afternoon of community and music and greet your neighbor. Free for members and $5 for the general public. Begins at 5 pm.

Saturday, October 6
Heritage Square Ghost Tour – Explore the dark side of the Museum and meet the past inhabitants of the historic structures. Reservations required, tickets go on sale in September. Admission price TBD. Begins at 7 pm.

Saturday, October 20
Halloween and Mourning Movie Night – You are invited to bring a picnic, blanket, chairs, and snacks to enjoy classic scary movies at the Museum…if you dare. Free for Museum members and $10 for the general public. Movie TBD. Begins at 7:30 pm.

Saturday and Sunday, October 27 and 28
9th Annual Halloween and Mourning Tours – Learn all about death and mourning etiquette during the Victorian era, the movement of Spiritualism, and how other cultures celebrate and remember their loved ones. The program is more family friendly on Sunday, as children ages 2 to 12 may come play period games, make 19th century harvest crafts, choose a pumpkin from the pumpkin patch, and listen to spooky stories. $10 for Adults, $8 for Seniors over 65, $5 for Children 6 to 12 years and free for Children under 6 years and Museum members. Begins at 12 pm to 4 pm.

Wednesday, October 31
Safe Haven Trick-or-Treating – Children 1 to 12 years of age, with parent accompaniment, may come in costume and receive sweet treats from the costumed interpreters stationed at each building. Admission price is $5 for Adults and $2 for Children 6 to 12. Children under 6 are free of charge. Begins at 4 pm to 7 pm.

Saturday and Sunday, December 1 and 2
18th Annual Holiday Lamplight Celebration – Witness as the past becomes the present among the beautiful glow of Victorian homes at the Museum’s annual event. Special event ticket prices. Sales begin in October from members and November for the general public, reservations required. $20 for Adults, $10 for Children over 6 years. Members get 20% off tickets-limited to their member level. Begins at 4 pm.

Heritage Square Museum is a living history museum that explores the settlement and development of Southern California from the Civil War to the early 20th Century, offering you a look into the everyday lives of Southern Californians at the close of the 19th Century.

The eight historic structures located at the museum, constructed during the Victorian Era, were saved from demolition and serve as a perfect background to educate you about the everyday lives of Southern Californians from the close of the 19th Century into the early decades of the 20th Century. From the simplicity of the Longfellow-Hastings Octagon House to the opulence of the William Perry Mansion, the Museum provides a unique look at the lifestyles of the people who contributed so much to the development of modern Los Angeles.

Guided tours of the museum are supplemented by living history performances, educational programs, hands-on training, exhibitions and special events, which take you back in time to the era where electricity was a novelty, a trip to the beach was often a full-weekend activity, and manners were distinctly different from those of today.

History

Heritage Square Museum transports you to the end of the 19th century, when California was a fledgling state and the former cow town El Pueblo de Los Angeles began shaping itself into the metropolis it is today.

The 1880s…It was the height of the Industrial Revolution. A world of knowledge and ideas was rapidly unfolding, mixing old and new, foreign and familiar. European design ideas were embraced wholly and without reserve. Transportation technology improved and expanded at a fantastic rate opening the door to the West to people from all around the globe. Factories utilizing recent advances in industrial technology were turning out mass-produced goods at prices affordable to the growing “middle class.” This, combined with the great Southern California Land Boom of the 1880s, resulted in a proliferation of elaborate and eclectic architecture throughout Los Angeles.

It was this architecture, characterized by gabled roofs, windowed turrets and intricately detailed woodwork that was threatened with extinction by a densely developing urban community in late 1960’s Los Angeles. In reaction to the almost daily destruction of irreplaceable buildings, a group of prominent citizens, with the assistance of the Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Board, began planning a new home for endangered structures.

However, the city-sponsored agency was limited as to the amount of public funding it could give the new project. In order to raise funds in the private sector, the Cultural Heritage Foundation of Southern California, Inc. was established. A non-profit organization that began raising funds to relocate endangered buildings to Heritage Square.

On weekends, take a tour on an exploration of Southern California history, architecture and culture as interpreted through the historic structures. At the Perry Gallery, thought-provoking and amusing exhibits can be seen year-round. In addition, Heritage Square Museum comes to life throughout the year for special living history events with museum interpreters in full period clothing.
