Jack’s 9th Show

September 3, 2014 — Leave a comment

93.1 Jack FM’s annual live concert event will host a night of performances by classic bands and hit songs that have resonated with listeners from the 80’s through today at Jack’s 9th Show. The lineup includes Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, Collective Soul, Billy Squier, Violent Femmes, Bow Wow Wow, and Naked Eyes who will all perform at The Theatre at Honda Center!

Joan Jett is an originator, an innovator, and a visionary. As the leader of the hard-rocking Blackhearts, she’s had eight platinum and gold albums and nine Top 40 singles, including the classics, “Bad Reputation,” “I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll,” “I Hate Myself For Loving You,” and “Crimson and Clover.” She sits at the head of her own independent label, Blackheart Records. Jett has acted in movies and television, including 1987’s Light Of Day, and in a Tony-nominated Broadway musical, “The Rocky Horror Show.”

Collective Soul shot to international fame with their 1993 release Hints, Allegations and Things Left Unsaid, and their mega #1 hit “Shine.” The album was a collection of Ed Roland’s demos that spread quickly through the college underground circuit and caught fire, going on to achieve Double-Platinum status.  After having been invited to the 25th Anniversary Woodstock concert, Collective Soul went into the studio to record their sophomore follow-up. The self-titled Collective Soul, released in March of 1995, would be the album that would help define their sound of catchy melodies and guitar driven songs. Containing four outstanding singles (three of which reached #1), “December,” “The World I Know,” “Where The River Flows,” and “Gel,” it became Collective Soul’s highest selling album to date. The album went Triple-Platinum and spent 76 weeks on the Billboard Top 200 charts. 1997’s Platinum Disciplined Breakdown produced two more #1 hits, “Precious Declaration” and “Listen.” 1999 brought the album Dosage which provided another strong showing for the band, producing the #1 hit song “Heavy,” which would take the top Billboard spot for a (then) record of 15 weeks.

Violent Femmes formed in 1981 as an acoustic punk band playing on the streets of Milwaukee. Their main influences at that time were Gene Vincent and the Blue Caps, and The Velvet Underground. Their goal: to rock harder than any other acoustic act on the planet. They were rejected for an audition by a local nightclub and set up outside a Pretenders gig. Chrissie Hynde asked them to open that night’s show. This gave the early Femmes a publicity boost.  A rave New York Times review led eventually to a record deal, which in turn spawned worldwide touring. Their eponymous first album became the first and only album in Billboard history to enter the charts as a platinum album, eight years after its release. The Femmes became a mainstay of festivals, clubs and theatres in over 30 countries worldwide in the ensuing three decades. Their raw sound and honest lyrical perspective has been cited as an influence by artists as diverse as Pink, Keith Urban, The Smiths, Nirvana, Lou Reed, John Cusack, Mark Morris, and Wim Wenders.

Bow Wow Wow’s music ranges from simple, irreverent tunes to crisp pop masterpieces.  The band packaged all of this together with an incredible sense of humor and vigor.   Bow Wow Wow’s strong identity and unique musical style was a reaction to the gloom of the London and U.S. music scene in the early 80’s.  Protégé’s of Malcolm McLaren, Bow Wow Wow’s first U.K. top 10 hit, “Go Wild in the Country” hit the charts in 1981.  The group’s first U.S. hit would have to wait for the release of the “Last of the Mohicans” EP in 1982. Producer Kenny Laguna, who had worked with Joan Jett, was brought in to record their smash track, “I Want Candy.”  It was a Top 10 hit in the U.K., and made it into the Top 40 on the American charts.  Looking back, that song defines something essential about the early 80’s. The look of the band was just right for MTV and it was a touchstone for pop and New Wave fans alike.  Twenty years on, Bow Wow Wow was asked to reform to help 106.7 KROQ celebrate its 25th Anniversary. The band performed alongside such luminaries as Duran Duran, The Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen, Soft Cell’s Marc Almond and Interpol at the station’s annual Inland Invasion concert. The 45,000+ sell-out event, held at the Glen Helen Hyundai Pavilion on September 20, 2003, was KROQ’s fastest selling concert ever.  After having a blast on stage in front of 30,000 + people, Bow Wow Wow decided to continue doing what they do best…playing killer live shows. Over the past years the band have also made numerous radio and TV appearances (including Jimmy Kimmel Live, FUSE TV’s Daily Download and more).

Founded by Pete Byrne (vocalist) and Rob Fisher (keyboards), Naked Eyes exploded into the Top Ten with their cover of the Burt Bacharach/Hal David tune “Always Something There To Remind Me.”  They followed this success with  the self-penned hits “Promises, Promises” and “When The Lights Go Out.” The back to back to back hits resulted in massive U.S. radio airplay and an almost constant presence on MTV.  Although the band was expecting to tour, the label wanted a follow-up, so the duo went into the studio to record Fuel for the Fire which produced the hit single “(What) In The Name of Love.” Soon enough, Byrne and Fisher were asked to begin work on yet another release, but, rather than continuing what was becoming a never-ending cycle, they decided to walk away and leave Naked Eyes as a project to be continued… The next few years saw both Byrne and Fisher involved in a number of various activities.   Just at the start of the millennium, Byrne and Fisher decided to pick up where Naked Eyes had left off and started work on a third album. Sadly, it was tragically interrupted when Fisher passed away.  Left to carry on solo, Byrne decided that the best course of action was to start where it had all begun all those years ago back in Bath. “I went out and got a guitar, then with guitar and title in hand, went looking for the songs that inspired me to be in a band in the first place.” That brings us to where we are now, Naked Eyes has been playing live shows across America from Hollywood to Carnegie Hall , has performed on PBS, and put out a live concert DVD.

The Harlem Globetrotters

February 11, 2013 — Leave a comment

The Harlem Globetrotters return to Los Angeles for another action packed game of street basketball at the Staples Center and Honda Center! They are an exhibition basketball team that combines athleticism, theater, and comedy. The acts often feature incredible coordination and skillful handling of one or more basketballs, such as passing or juggling balls between players, balancing or spinning balls on their fingertips, and making unusual, difficult shots.

The Globetrotters started in Chicago, Illinois in the 1920s, where a 24-year-old businessman named Abe Saperstein formed a small basketball team called the Savoy Big Five. He was just trying to promote a nightclub called the Savoy Ballroom, but in just a few years the team had played over 1,000 games around the country and become the Harlem Globetrotters.

They decided to pick Harlem as their home city since Harlem was considered the center of African-American culture at the time, and an out-of-town team name would give the team more of a mystique. The Globetrotters were initially a serious competitive team, and despite a flair for entertainment, they would only clown for the audience after establishing a safe lead in the game.

In 1941, the Globetrotters signed Reece “Goose” Tatum, an all-time great who developed amazing comedy moves and changed the direction of the team. By the end of the war the Globetrotters had played an incredible 30,000 games (losing only 2190) and were featured on the cover of Life magazine. Those were remarkable achievements at a time when America was deeply segregated by race. The team toured the world, breaking cultural and social barriers along with basketball records. They were the first team to play basketball in Europe.

The Globetrotters have appeared in their own movies and TV shows and have been seen by hundreds of millions of people in 120 countries. They are simply the most famous basketball team in the world.
