The Santa Monica Zombie Crawl returns for its third year, and will bring out the undead on Halloween night for a chilling bar crawl in the heart of the city. Starting on the Santa Monica Pier, crawlers will moan and growl their way through the city for spooky drink and food specials all night with the official wristband. Participating locations include Rusty’s Surf Ranch, Big Dean’s Oceanfront Cafe, Del Frisco’s Grille, Ye Olde King’s Head, Cabo Cantina, Barney’s Beanery, and West 4th/Jane.

Crawlers will have access to $4 drafts, $5 wells, and $5 shots at participating locations, and entrance into the Official Zombie After Party at Wokcano. Participants must follow specific Zombie Crawl rules to get through the streets: keep an authentic zombie appearance, keep arms extended outward, drag a limb and deliver vicious snarls, and moans without talking. Makeup artists from Toni & Guy Hairdressing Academy will be on-site at the starting location to assist with the zombie-fying process.

Victoria Beach Tower

February 18, 2015 — Leave a comment

Victoria Beach is one of Orange County’s more secluded public areas, the tiny beach is guarded by rocky cliffs on both ends and is only accessible by a narrow concrete stairway down a steep slope. Above the beach, lush hillsides are dotted with large houses on stilts where the county’s wealthiest residents reside. Beyond the beach’s north end is a small cove, best explored at low tide, which harbors a storybook mystery known to some locals as the Pirate Tower.

tower

The 60 foot rocket-like structure seems to have been carved out of the cliff by massive waves hundreds of years ago. Ocean breezes moan through small portals covered by rusting metal grates on the tower’s sides and a large door at the structure’s base, also covered in rust, reveals a wooden spiral staircase twisting to the ledge above.

Screen Shot 2015-02-17 at 5.35.49 PM

According to a report written by the California Department of Parks and Recreation, both the house and tower were built in 1926 for the family of William E. Brown, a state senator representing California’s 37th district, and a frequent Christian Science lecturer. As it turns out, the tower is nothing more than a fancy staircase for the homeowner above. But the backstory is interesting nonetheless.

The tower is located below Victoria Drive off the South Coast Highway at Victoria Beach.

To gain access to the tower take Dumond Drive down to the beach and turn right and walk along the cliff. Access may be limited depending on the tide.

Take A Hike Day

November 14, 2014 — Leave a comment

There is no better time to celebrate the brisk beauty that is late autumn than on Take a Hike Day. On November 17th, as the last of the deep red and orange leaves finally relinquish their grasp on their branches and fall crunchily to the forest floor, it’s time to take a hike and take advantage of all Mother Nature has to offer. Not only is hiking a great way to discover local scenery, there are also many health benefits – both physical and psychological – linked to hiking.

hike

Depending on the difficulty of the hiking trail you choose to take, and the weight of your backpack, an hour of hiking can easily burn 500 calories. The usually grassy terrain of hiking trails is known to be easier on joints than the hard concrete of an indoor track, reducing your risk of a stress injury while exercising.

Hiking has been linked to decreasing the symptoms of depression. Removing yourself from the pressures of a busy life and the constant distractions produced by technology will allow you to reconnect with yourself, resulting in increased moods and a sense of well-being.

Sunday Funday Ride

October 27, 2014 — Leave a comment

Organized by Santa Monica Spoke, LACBC, and CalBike Board member Cynthia Rose, this ride will be a little different from other Sunday Funday Rides, as they will be riding up the Pacific Coast Highway to meet with the CalBike‘s California by Bike Tour Surf N Turf. They’ll ride to Nicolas Canyon Beach where they will join CalBike for lunch ($10 catered lunch or bring your own). Snacks will be provided.

b1

After lunch they will ride as a group back to the Santa Monica Pier where they are planning a Happy Hour nearby where all are invited!

Screen Shot 2014-10-27 at 11.31.55 AM

This is not a roadie race; they will travel at an easy pace but ask riders to stay focused and make the effort to keep the group together. Use your judgement if you think you can make this trip. Please do not hesitate to inquire if you have questions or concerns. There is the option to return on Metro 534 from Trancas (4.3 miles from south of Nicolas Beach lunch stop). Because of the route, children cannot participate unless they are attached to adult rider bike or they are capable of keeping up a reasonable pace.
