The Venice Canal Historic District is a district in the Venice section of Los Angeles just two blocks east of the Pacific Ocean. The district is noteworthy for its enclave of homes built around six slim man-made canals where residents and ducks paddle by.

venice-beach-canals

The canals were built in 1905 by developer and tobacco millionaire Abbot Kinney, an asthmatic, entrepreneurial dreamer who won the land in a coin toss as part of his Venice of America plan.

13.Venice.Canals copy

Now a quaint upscale neighborhood, fully restored and remodeled homes make it a postcard scene along the canal shores. Facing the water, the houses are a collection of architectural styles; everything from mid-century modern to storybook cottage, to Roman-inspired villa.

The beautifully lit canals with gondoliers and arched bridges drew widespread publicity and helped sell lots in the development. However, as the automobile gained in popularity, the canals were viewed by many as outdated, and the bulk of the canals were filled in 1929 to create roads.

6908578850_25468d8e1f_b

The original 16 miles of canals were dug in 1904 under the direction of Abbot Kinney. Man and mule worked around the clock to dig the canals in time for the grand opening of Venice on July 4, 1905.

Screen Shot 2013-06-27 at 4.07.03 PM

Kinney was displeased with the progress so he deployed steam dredging equipment to complete the canals on time.

Screen Shot 2013-06-27 at 4.07.18 PM

Kinney sought to recreate the appearance and feel of Venice, Italy in Southern California. The canals are roughly bounded by Eastern Court on the east, Court A on the south, Strongs Drive on the west, and Court E on the north. There are four east-west canals: Carroll Canal, Linnie Canal, Howland Canal, and Sherman Canal, and two north-south canals: Eastern Canal and Grand Canal.

By 1940, the remaining canals had fallen into disrepair, and the sidewalks were condemned by the city. The canal district remained in poor condition for more than 40 years, as numerous proposals to renovate the canals failed due to lack of funding, environmental concerns, and disputes as to who should bear the financial responsibility.

16.Venice.Canals

The canals were finally renovated in 1992, with the canals being drained and new sidewalks and walls. The canals re-opened in 1993 and have become a desirable and expensive residential section of the city.

The Will Rogers State Historic Park was the private ranch of the world-famous movie star and American Cowboy, Will Rogers. In the early 1930s, Rogers was the most popular and highest paid actor in Hollywood. From his start in vaudeville theater with a trick roping act, he rose to world-wide fame as a columnist, philosopher, and radio personality. During the 1920s, he bought land in Santa Monica, where he developed a ranch. Eventually, Rogers owned 186 acres overlooking the Pacific Ocean, in what is now known as Pacific Palisades.

House exterior

The ranch became the place where Will Rogers could relax with his family and friends, pursuing his favorite pastimes of riding and roping. At his untimely death in a plane crash in 1935, Will Rogers’ ranch consisted of a 31-room ranch house, a stable, corrals, riding ring, roping arena, polo field, golf course, and hiking trails. When his widow, Betty, died in 1944, the ranch became a state park.

Activities at the Park

The Park is undergoing a major historic renovation project that will restore the landscape to its appearance during Will Rogers’ time. In the past two years, the Department has restored the ranch house and completed significant portions of the landscape restoration program. Over the next several years, the Department will be restoring the historic structures and relocating the maintenance facilities away from the historic zone. Details of the restoration program may be found in the Historic Landscape Management Plan.

The glorious Queen Mary epitomizes a proud Scottish ancestry. Built in the famed John Brown shipyards along the River Clyde, she is Scottish through and through. Once a world-leader in industrial design and manufacture, Scotland’s many shipyards, foundries, and production mills built the ships and trains that linked the global British Empire and helped make the world a smaller village. Now she stands sentinel to the annual two-day ScotsFest, herself a living testimonial to Scottish engineering and the appropriate backdrop to Southern California’s multi-cultural gathering of the clans.

The Aquarium of the Pacific is a great family oriented destination where you can have fun while learning. The Aquarium is home to more than 11,000 ocean animals, representing nearly 500 species, the Aquarium celebrates the planet’s largest and most diverse body of water: the Pacific Ocean. Featuring 19 major habitats and 32 focus exhibits, the  Aquarium of the Pacific  is a world-class aquarium, exploring the waters of Southern California and Baja, the Northern Pacific, and the Tropical Pacific.

Aquarium Exhibits

Arctic & Antarctic: Our Polar Regions in Peril:

The Arctic and Antarctica are very cold and dry. Despite these inhospitable conditions, a variety of plants and animals have adapted to thrive in these regions of our planet. Journey to the icy edges of the Earth in this new exhibit. Touch sea jellies. View king crabs. And meet a real live Arctic fox.

Learn about climate change, which is causing warmer ocean temperatures, melting ice, rising seas, and more, is posing a serious threat to these fragile ecosystems and ultimately people and animals across the globe.

Ocean Science Center:

Travel across the planet in the National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Science on a Sphere and learn about our rising sea and ports and maritime trade. This is a one-of-a-kind virtual learning center.

The Aquarium’s Ocean Science Center uses a Science on a Sphere from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to explore our planet and tell stories about ocean phenomena and their impacts. Currently, the center is featuring daily shows on sea level rise and ports.

Southern California/Baja Gallery:

Extending 800 miles from Oregon to Mexico, California’s coastal waters include a variety of ecosystems, animals, and temperatures. Beyond the most southwestern point of the United States, extending along the coast of Mexico to the Sea of Cortez, is the Baja Peninsula. See sea lions and other life up close and personal.

The Baja coast includes warm bays and lagoons, mangrove forests, and giant kelp forests. Because of the diversity of habitats found along the coast, a large variety of species are found within California and Baja California waters, many of which are featured in the Aquarium’s Southern California/Baja Gallery.

Northern Pacific Gallery:

The Aquarium’s Northern Pacific Gallery represents the northernmost region of the Pacific Ocean, specifically habitats in and around the Bering Sea. Covering over 800,000 square miles between Alaska, Siberia, the Bering Strait, and the Aleutian Islands, the Bering Sea has an upwelling of cold water that replaces the warmer surface water, with temperatures staying below 54 degrees. See these cold water animals through the enormous Aquarium.

The Bering Sea is home to over 450 species of fish and invertebrates, 50 bird species, and 25 species of marine mammals. At the Aquarium, you can join on a journey through the Northern Pacific—home to the adorable otter and the mysterious giant Pacific octopus.

Tropical Pacific Gallery:

The warm, 80-degree waters of Micronesia contain an astounding 2,100 islands. Palau, the westernmost section of the Micronesian islands, runs north to south, covering approximately 125 miles. Considered by many to be among the most beautiful in the world, Palau’s waters contain an incredible diversity of coral, fish, and other colorful marine life. The 16 exhibits in the Aquarium’s Tropical Pacific Gallery represent the beautiful marine life you would find off the coast of Palau.

The Tropical Reef Habitat, which can be viewed from three locations in the gallery, is the Aquarium’s largest exhibit. Holding 350,000 gallons of water, this exhibit features over a thousand colorful fish and beautiful coral, including sea turtles, zebra and blacktip reef sharks, porcupine puffers, and a large blue Napoleon or humphead wrasse.

Dining

If you’d like to have lunch at the Aquarium, Café Scuba is the perfect place to grab a meal or a quick snack. They serve a variety of sandwiches, salads, burgers, pizza, and more, providing a relaxed atmosphere overlooking the Seals & Sea Lions exhibit. Additional food can be found at Bamboo Bistro, the Coffee Cart, and the Jamba Juice hut. For hours and menu click here.

575

In addition to the three main galleries highlighting the major regions of the Pacific, the Aquarium features three major exhibitions. Shark Lagoon and the Lorikeet Forest aviary offer an outdoor adventure in Explorer’s Cove. Their special exhibits gallery features changing exhibits.

These are just a few of the exhibits and galleries the Aquarium has to offer. Check out the visitors guide and calendar of events for more information.
