Culver City Park Ropes And Nature Trail

Culver City Park is home to a new open ropes course, run by Fulcrum Adventures. The “Culver City team building high ropes challenge course” features eight elevated events, including a fifty-foot climbing wall, a beam walk, a power pole, and a trapeze jump. Looks scary but very fun!

The team building high ropes challenge course features elevated events that thrill and give participants and organizations the opportunity to rise to their full potential. The course begins with a large, fifty-foot leadership climbing wall capable of simultaneously supporting two individuals while they scale their way to a panoramic view of the city. Other elements include high team building wire walks, a partnership balancing beam, a leadership leap of faith, and the giant swing.

In addition to high ropes challenges, the Culver City location also offers spacious picnic and activity grounds for meals, games, and team building activities. Their staff utilizes this beautiful environment to develop a memorable, exciting, and enriching program for clients.

Nestled among trees, the ropes course challenge offers breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and surrounding coastal cities. It is conveniently located near the 405 and 10 freeways.

Across from the Boneyard (dog park) in the Culver City Park, is a long ramp that zigzags up a cliff. This is the Interpretive Nature Trail, a 20 minute trail designed for wheelchair accessibility, the visually impaired, and the casual trailblazer.

Venice Canal Historic District

The Venice Canal Historic District is a district in the Venice section of Los Angeles just two blocks east of the Pacific Ocean. The district is noteworthy for its enclave of homes built around six slim man-made canals where residents and ducks paddle by.

The canals were built in 1905 by developer and tobacco millionaire Abbot Kinney, an asthmatic, entrepreneurial dreamer who won the land in a coin toss as part of his Venice of America plan.

Now a quaint upscale neighborhood, fully restored and remodeled homes make it a postcard scene along the canal shores. Facing the water, the houses are a collection of architectural styles; everything from mid-century modern to storybook cottage, to Roman-inspired villa.

The beautifully lit canals with gondoliers and arched bridges drew widespread publicity and helped sell lots in the development. However, as the automobile gained in popularity, the canals were viewed by many as outdated, and the bulk of the canals were filled in 1929 to create roads.

The original 16 miles of canals were dug in 1904 under the direction of Abbot Kinney. Man and mule worked around the clock to dig the canals in time for the grand opening of Venice on July 4, 1905.

Kinney was displeased with the progress so he deployed steam dredging equipment to complete the canals on time.

Kinney sought to recreate the appearance and feel of Venice, Italy in Southern California. The canals are roughly bounded by Eastern Court on the east, Court A on the south, Strongs Drive on the west, and Court E on the north. There are four east-west canals: Carroll Canal, Linnie Canal, Howland Canal, and Sherman Canal, and two north-south canals: Eastern Canal and Grand Canal.

By 1940, the remaining canals had fallen into disrepair, and the sidewalks were condemned by the city. The canal district remained in poor condition for more than 40 years, as numerous proposals to renovate the canals failed due to lack of funding, environmental concerns, and disputes as to who should bear the financial responsibility.

The canals were finally renovated in 1992, with the canals being drained and new sidewalks and walls. The canals re-opened in 1993 and have become a desirable and expensive residential section of the city.

Will Rogers State Historic Park

The Will Rogers State Historic Park was the private ranch of the world-famous movie star and American Cowboy, Will Rogers. In the early 1930s, Rogers was the most popular and highest paid actor in Hollywood. From his start in vaudeville theater with a trick roping act, he rose to world-wide fame as a columnist, philosopher, and radio personality. During the 1920s, he bought land in Santa Monica, where he developed a ranch. Eventually, Rogers owned 186 acres overlooking the Pacific Ocean, in what is now known as Pacific Palisades.

The ranch became the place where Will Rogers could relax with his family and friends, pursuing his favorite pastimes of riding and roping. At his untimely death in a plane crash in 1935, Will Rogers’ ranch consisted of a 31-room ranch house, a stable, corrals, riding ring, roping arena, polo field, golf course, and hiking trails. When his widow, Betty, died in 1944, the ranch became a state park.

Ranch House Tours

Park staff offer tours of the Ranch House and grounds. However, you and your family can enjoy many features of the Park on your own. Download the Self-Guided Ranch Tour Card. Tours run Thursdays and Fridays, from 11:00 am – 3:00 pm, and Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm, on the top of the hour. No tours Monday through Wednesday. School group tours and special group tours run Thursday and Fridays at 10:00 am.

Equestrian Activities

The Will Rogers Polo Club plays polo every weekend from April to October. Riding Lessons are available on Monday through Saturday; see their Horseback Riding Lessons Information Page. Equestrians are welcome to bring their horses to the park for day-use to enjoy the riding and roping arena, Sarah’s Point, and the trail to Inspiration Point.

Horseback Riding

Will Rogers Trail Rides provide guided trail rides on safe, reliable horses on the beautiful trails of Will Rogers State Historic Park. You will experience the park in the way Will Rogers used to love to experience it, on horseback. Their wranglers are experienced and safety oriented, so you can relax and enjoy the trails of one of the most beloved parks in Los Angeles. Will Rogers guided trail rides are available every day except Mondays. Tuesday through Fridays you can book a private guided ride by calling (310) 662-3707 or go online for more information.

Hiking Trails

Hikers can enjoy a moderate 3-mile loop to Inspiration Point. Adventurous hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians can tackle the Backbone Trail into the Santa Monica Mountains, which can take you all the way to Point Mugu.

Activities at the Park

The Park is undergoing a major historic renovation project that will restore the landscape to its appearance during Will Rogers’ time. In the past two years, the Department has restored the ranch house and completed significant portions of the landscape restoration program. Over the next several years, the Department will be restoring the historic structures and relocating the maintenance facilities away from the historic zone. Details of the restoration program may be found in the Historic Landscape Management Plan.

Visitor Center

The Visitor Center is open to the public after a major renovation and has new exhibits. The Gift Store in the Visitor Center contains Will Rogers books, Will Rogers DVD’s, and Will Rogers radio broadcasts. It also carries polo mallets and polo balls and a fine line of Indian Jewelry. Gift Store Hours are Thursday – Sunday 10:30 am – 5:30 pm.

The 2nd Annual West Coast BBQ Classic

Grill masters from around the country will gather at Queen Mary’s Waterfront Events Park to compete for the title of West Coast’s Best BBQ. Let your taste buds rage over which barbecue style is king. Prefer Memphis to Texas or savory to sweet? You be the judge at the 2nd Annual West Coast BBQ Classic!

The Queen Mary’s 2nd Annual West Coast BBQ Classic is an official California-State-Certified, KCBS-Sanctioned, BBQ Championship sponsored by Jack Daniel’s. Sixty top BBQ Pit Masters from around the country will compete for thousands of dollars in prize money and the opportunity to be crowned as the winner of the coveted “People’s Choice” award, including 2012 Champion All Sauced Up. “We have nearly tripled our competitors this year” said Director of Special Events Steve Sheldon, “Our team registration sold out in record pace. We are thrilled to offer such a vast field of teams this year.”

Held at the Queen Mary Waterfront Events Park, the event features live bands, a Jack Daniel’s Back Yard Bar, Merchant Market, Kid’s Country including obstacle course, and Adult Lawn Games area with giant beer pong, there will also be a special appearance by The LA King’s Ice Crew.

West Coasters from near and far are invited to join top pit masters from around the country at this one-day BBQ Championship featuring music by local favorites: Knyght Ryder, The Record Company, and The Shoemaker Brothers.

Located in the Port of Long Beach, the Queen Mary features a rich maritime history, authentic Art Deco décor, and stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and Long Beach city skyline. At the time of her maiden voyage in May of 1936, she was considered the grandest ocean liner ever built. The Queen Mary’s signature restaurants include the award-winning Sir Winston’s Restaurant and Lounge and Chelsea Chowder House and Bar as well as a weekly Champagne Sunday Brunch served in the ship’s Grand Salon.

History buffs enjoy the ship’s museum and Glory Days tour, guests of all ages love the Ghosts and Legends show, and the ship is currently featuring the renowned Diana: Legacy of a Princess exhibit and Tea Room. The Queen Mary features 80,000 square feet of event space in 17 remarkable Art Deco salons as well as a tri-level, 45,000-square-foot Exhibit Hall. The Asics Los Angeles Marathon

The ASICS Los Angeles Marathon is more than just a race, it’s a total community effort, with support and encouragement at every turn. Register to run, come out to see the runners, or volunteer. The marathon is a great Los Angeles tradition and outdoor activity!

Participants will run the Stadium to the Sea course; beginning at Dodger Stadium and head through Los Angeles, Hollywood, West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, and down to the beaches of Santa Monica.

Runners finish with a final stretch alongside the beautiful Pacific Ocean. Throughout the course, runners will take in signature sites including El Pueblo de Los Angeles (the city’s birthplace), Los Angeles City Hall, the Capitol Records Building, the Dolby Theater (home of the Oscars), the Sunset Strip, historic Route 66, Rodeo Drive, and the Santa Monica Pier.

As runners leave Beverly Hills and head toward Mile 18, they will be greeted by hundreds of local cheerleaders making noise to encourage runners get to the finish line of the ASICS Los Angeles Marathon. Cheer Alley is the Pep-Rally of the year, and is comprised of Middle and High School cheerleaders from Southern California.
