The 126th Rose Parade

December 24, 2014 — Leave a comment

Each New Year’s Day, the world focuses its attention on Pasadena, home of the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl Game. It’s a celebration more than a century old – a festival of flowers, music, and sports unequaled anywhere else in the world. It’s America’s New Year Celebration, a greeting to the world on the first day of the year, and a salute to the community spirit and love of pageantry that have thrived in Pasadena for more than 100 years.

An event as large as the Tournament of Roses requires about 80,000 hours of combined manpower each year. That manpower is supplied by 935 members of the non-profit Tournament of Roses Association, a volunteer organization dedicated to presenting an internationally recognized New Year’s celebration.

Today is the national observance of one of the greatest civil rights champions and influential leaders of our time, and to honor the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., many area celebrations are being held around SoCal. From parades, peaceful activities, and celebrations, there’s something for the whole family to participate in to remember and honor the great legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King.

The 125th Tournament of Roses Parade presented by Honda, themed “Dreams Come True,” will feature floral floats, spirited marching bands, and high-stepping equestrian units along the 5 1/2 mile route down Colorado Boulevard. Experience – in person – the magic of New Year’s Day in an unrivaled celebration, exclusive to the streets of Pasadena!

The theme is a reminder that not only is it possible to attain the seemingly unattainable through extraordinary focus, effort, and belief in the probability of success, but that it has been done. Throughout all of human history, we have achieved “the impossible” by believing in the power of our dreams.

The Rose Parade features three types of entries: floral-decorated floats sponsored by a participating corporation or community organization, equestrian units, and marching bands. The only cars that appear in the Rose Parade are those that may carry the Grand Marshal, the Mayor of Pasadena, the Rose Bowl Game Hall of Fame Inductees, and the Tournament of Roses President. Many of the Rose Parade’s participating organizations have long histories with the Tournament of Roses and have made numerous appearances in the parade.

Those lucky enough to get a spot along the Rose Parade route are treated to a two-hour parade of magnificent floral floats, talented marching bands, and high-stepping equestrians. The 5 1/2-mile Rose Parade route begins at the corner of Green Street and Orange Grove Boulevard in Pasadena. The parade travels north on Orange Grove at a leisurely 2 1/2-mile per hour pace and then turns east onto Colorado Boulevard, where the majority of the parade viewing takes place. Near the end of the route, the parade turns north onto Sierra Madre Boulevard and concludes at Villa Street.

Each September, close to 1,000 young women vie for the honor of serving as a member of the Tournament of Roses Royal Court. Multiple rounds of interviews take place over the course of a month, with the Tournament’s Queen and Court Committee looking for those participants with the right combination of poise, personality, public speaking ability, and scholastic achievement.

Royal Court members become ambassadors of the Tournament, and selecting the right young women is an important task. This year, The Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association today named Ana Marie Acosta as the 96th Rose Queen in an official ceremony at First Church of the Nazarene of Pasadena.

Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully, an icon in American sports history and “the voice of the Los Angeles Dodgers” for 64 years, will be the Grand Marshal for the 2014 Tournament of Roses. In selecting Scully, Tournament of Roses President Scott Jenkins stated that beyond the broadcaster’s innumerable accolades, it is his humility and integrity that are most impressive.
