The Grove Theatre presents One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. A dramatic story that follows Randle McMurphy, a boisterous, charming, life-affirming rogue who contrives a plan to avoid hard labor and serve the rest of his prison sentence  in a more relaxed mental hospital environment rather than in a prison. Once there, he clashes with the head nurse, and manages to accomplish what the medical profession had failed to do, leading many of the other patients out of introversion. McMurphy stages numerous revolts against the head nurse, and his defiance, which starts as sport, quickly develops into a grim power struggle with the institution.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is the unforgettable story of a mental hospital and its inhabitants in a world where sanity means conformity and following the rules is the only way to survive. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is a powerful exploration of the beauty and the danger of being an original. Dale Wasserman adapted One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest from the novel by Ken Kesey.  The play opened on Broadway in 1963 with Kirk Douglas as McMurphy, Ed Ames as the Chief and Gene Wilder as Billy. After opening on Broadway, The New York Times called the play “scarifying and powerful,” while The New York Daily News called it “funny, touching, and exciting.” Directed by Barry Devine, and featuring a talented cast, Cuckoo’s Nest is not to be missed.

ISC was founded in 1998 by a group of actors who shared a passion for classical works. They were intent on rendering vivid productions of Shakespeare’s plays. Their focus was stripping back the conventions of contemporary theater and placing their attention onto the spoken word. Shakespeare produced his plays without lighting, without recorded sound, and without elaborate scenery and costumes, as do they.

One of Shakespeare’s most popular comedies tells the story of a kingdom in disorder. Its rightful leader is banished, a young man is denied his due by his malevolent elder brother, and a woman is exiled from the place that has always been her home. All of their paths lead away from the “painted pomp” of the court into the heart of the forest of Arden. It’s a place where natural laws outweigh the laws of man and the force of love reigns supreme. As bitter winter passes into the bloom of spring, the residents of Arden discover that transformation is always possible, and sometimes the disguises we wear are the best way to discover who we are.

Harmony: A New Musical

February 17, 2014 — 2 Comments

Harmony is inspired by the true story of The Comedian Harmonists, six young men in 1920s and 1930s Germany who rose from unemployed street musicians to become world-famous entertainers, selling millions of records, starring in over a dozen films, and selling out the most prestigious concert halls around the world. Yet while The Comedian Harmonists’ sophisticated music, paired with hilarious comedy, made them the brightest of stars, the group’s mixture of Jews and non-Jews put them on a collision course with history.

Their amazing story inspired longtime collaborators, the legendary Barry Manilow and theatre veteran Bruce Sussman, to create a spectacular new musical with an original score that celebrates this extraordinary group of friends and ensures their quest for true harmony in the most discordant chapter of human history will never be forgotten. “We are both thrilled to finally return to our first love–writing a musical together. Especially this one,” Manilow and Sussman shared. “It has been an indescribable honor to spend all this time in the company of these six extraordinary men.”

Regret and sibling rivalry fan the flames of laughter in Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, a wickedly wonderful Chekhovian mash-up that equally tickles both the casual theatregoer and the ardent student of the Russian classics. Melancholy turns into mayhem when Vanya and his sister Sonia—along with their clairvoyant housekeeper Cassandra—are paid a surprise visit by Hollywood star sibling Masha and her twenty something boy toy Spike in a play by Christopher Durang.
