Located in the heart of Los Angeles’ historic Melrose shopping district, the Melrose Umbrella Co. brings the social cocktail experience back to basics, where chivalry is alive and well: a place where you are welcomed as a neighbor in an atmosphere that feels like home.

The Melrose Umbrella Co. pays homage to the history of the post-prohibition era, and the rebirth of America’s culinary contribution – the cocktail. The building in which the Melrose Umbrella Co. is housed was built in the midst of the excitement of the demise of prohibition, after the 18th amendment was lifted via ratification of the 21st amendment. Making it the only instance in U.S. history that a constitutional amendment was retracted.

Yamashiro Hollywood’s Guest Chef Series returns for its 3rd installment during the LA Icon’s 100 year anniversary. Executive chef Brock Kleweno welcomes retro pop soul duo David & Devine, whose original works – to be performed live – have inspired the five-course dinner they will accompany.

“Food and music have always been connected for me. Each dish I make should have a verse and chorus, harmony and pitch. I’m so excited to conceptualize dishes that are inspired by David & Devine’s original music, as I’ve been a huge fan of them for years now. Adding to that, the fact that I get to work with Chef Betty Fraser – who is beyond talented – I feel very lucky. It’s going to be a great night of music, food, and friends,” said Kleweno.

Chef Brock’s Modern American 5-course menu will be accompanied with wine pairings and highlighted by a taste of Chef Betty Fraser’s Grub.

Guest Chef Series III Menu

  • First Course: surf & turf of caviar and violet-mustard filet tartare
  • Second Course: artichoke soup & hearts of palm salad
  • Third Course: Chef Betty Fraser’s “N’Awlins Creole Shrimp”
  • Fourth Course: wild boar osso buco with mole
  • Fifth Course: Yamashiro birthday cake, homemade cookies & ice cream

About David and Devine

Pop-Soul music is currently all the rage, and L.A.-based David & Devine are the soulful duo consisting of Candace Devine (vocals) and Dave Yaden (piano-vocals). As a new school act, they have enjoyed radio airplay for their song “Leave The Light On” while being signed to top Hollywood talent agency ICM and working with a well-known L.A. music manager – all without the benefit of a major label deal.

About Chef Betty Fraser and Grub

Betty Fraser is co-owner (with Denise DeCarlo) of the popular, LA-based As You Like It Catering and award-winning restaurant Grub. Hidden-away in a converted 1920’s duplex centered in the heart of Hollywood’s hip Post-Production District, Grub’s guests are treated to slowly rotating ceiling fans, beautiful hardwood floors, a wall of windows looking out to the outdoor patio seating area and an eclectic array of artwork celebrating local artists that is best described as “contemporary-kitsch.” Grub is a perpetual sea of activity with capacity crowds treated like members of the family while being served fresh, delicious and fun food designed to comfort the soul and put a smile on the face.

About Yamashiro

Yamashiro – translated to “mountain palace” – broke ground in 1911 and was completed in 1914 as a residence for the Bernheimer brothers. Housing a priceless collection of Asian treasures, the building was designed as an exact replica of a palace located in the mountains near Kyoto, Japan.

exterior-night

During the “Golden Age” of Hollywood, Yamashiro served as the ultra-exclusive social house for the “Club of the Four Hundred”, comprised of the era’s most famous and influential stars and movie moguls. The structure and its grounds served as a boy’s military school, and then apartments, before being acquired in 1948 by Thomas O. Glover, who discovered the beauty beneath the disrepair and refurbished the space. Currently owned by Thomas Y. Glover, son of Thomas O. Glover, Yamashiro is flourishing 60 years later as an Asian-inspired Los Angeles institution.

Chef Vernon Cardenas, formerly of Innovative Dining Group (Katana) and Pink Taco, has put together a delicious menu of the best tasting pub food you’ve ever had. Pizzas. Salads. And steak, seafood, and pasta plates to satisfy the heavier appetites.

Take a seat at one of their four bars and you’ll have your choice of 20 draft beers (Allagash, Angry Orchard, Firestone, and Green Flash to name a few). Try one of their beer cocktails like the Brewjito (strawberry, mint, lime, agave, and Allagash White Belgium Ale) or The Hidden Gun (Irish Whiskey, Amero, orange bitters, and Guinness Stout). Not a beer drinker? Not a problem. They’ve got the freshest and tastiest Specialty Drinks around like the Sunset Strip (Don Julio anejo tequila, mint, sugar, grapefruit, and fresh lime) or the Thai’d Up (Akvinta Vodka, strawberry, balsamic vinegar, basil, and lemon).
