The Graffiti Run

March 2, 2015 — Leave a comment

The Graffiti Run will be the most colorful day of your life. Bold statement, we know (especially if you lived through the 70′s or ever owned a hyper-color t-shirt), but just hear us out. First off, they use the term “run” loosely at the Graffiti Run. Their 5K course is more about having a blast with friends and family than it is about busting out four-minute miles. So feel free to run, walk, dance, crawl, roll, piggy-back ride, or summersault your way through the color madness.

Secondly, the no-six-pack-required course means the Graffiti fun Run is for EVERYONE (unless you hate color or smiling, then you are not invited). You will see green grand-parents next to pink college students. Yellow marathon runners alongside blue children. Orange moms next to purple unicorns. They only have two rules: you must get absolutely drenched in color and have an amazing time.

This event not only brings the fun before the feast, but also offers a chance to give back to those in need during the holidays through the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank and other local charities. Families can bring little ones for the “Widdle Wobble” (ages 2-12), which allows children to run for fun around Grand Park. Participants also get to meet for memorable photo opportunities with the 20 foot tall turkey in front of the finish line at City Hall.

As one of SoCal’s largest social service providers, health and wellness is at the helm of the Midnight Mission’s pivotal programming designed to improve physical and emotional health of its clients. From its revolutionary culinary program for its residences to its competitive basketball program, the Midnight brings together primary healthcare with fitness classes and exercise opportunities. Underscoring the Midnight’s health and wellness initiatives, there has been a longstanding Running Club led by L.A. County Superior Court Judge Craig Mitchell, whose had a longstanding involvement with the Midnight Mission, starting a running club in 2012 and since then, mentoring Midnight’s residents on their road to recovery. This year, 9 Midnight Runners completed the LA Marathon and will lead this year’s Midnight MIssion’s 5K/10K run/walk. Proceeds from last year’s event went towards sending three of the Midnight’s Runners to Ghana where they participated in the Accra International Marathon. All proceeds from this year’s event will go towards supporting the Midnight’s programming for SoCal’s neediest.

It’s truly a testament to the Midnight Mission’s ongoing dedication to advancing their health and wellness program as it commemorates its 100-year anniversary this year with the goal of rebuilding the lives of SoCal’s homeless population. More than 1,000 runners are expected to participate in the event. Awards and post-race lunch to follow.
