British Polo Day

May 25, 2015 — Leave a comment

On the heels of its success last year, British Polo Day – as the only international polo network of its kind – British presented by Land Rover and leading travel specialist Abercrombie & Kent, returns to the USA to ‘swing their mallets’ for British luxury heritage. Hosted by the President of the Will Rogers Polo Club, Andrew Bossom; Lord Frederick Windsor; and his wife, actress and writer Sophie Winkleman, guests and VIPs will be treated to a day of fast-paced polo. As part of an ongoing commitment to philanthropy, BPD USA is supporting local Los Angeles charity, Homeboy Industries alongside The UK Stem Cell Foundation.

Founded in 2009 by Edward Olver and his friend Tom Hudson, Polo Day Global Series has grown to encapsulate a network of 10 annual events, spanning the globe from Abu Dhabi to Australia, Mexico to Morocco (which Sir Richard Branson was recently involved with). With last year’s inaugural British Polo Day USA seeing the likes of The Duke of Argyll, David Walton, Elon Musk, Talulah Riley and Cassian Elwes come together to raise impressive funds for charity, this year’s event is set to raise the bar ever-higher. Nakoa Decoite, ‘big wave’ surfer, polo player and Royal Salute Ambassador will be among those celebrating the fundraising event of the season.

Take A Hike Day

November 14, 2014 — Leave a comment

There is no better time to celebrate the brisk beauty that is late autumn than on Take a Hike Day. On November 17th, as the last of the deep red and orange leaves finally relinquish their grasp on their branches and fall crunchily to the forest floor, it’s time to take a hike and take advantage of all Mother Nature has to offer. Not only is hiking a great way to discover local scenery, there are also many health benefits – both physical and psychological – linked to hiking.

hike

Depending on the difficulty of the hiking trail you choose to take, and the weight of your backpack, an hour of hiking can easily burn 500 calories. The usually grassy terrain of hiking trails is known to be easier on joints than the hard concrete of an indoor track, reducing your risk of a stress injury while exercising.

Hiking has been linked to decreasing the symptoms of depression. Removing yourself from the pressures of a busy life and the constant distractions produced by technology will allow you to reconnect with yourself, resulting in increased moods and a sense of well-being.

Whether you choose to spend your time in self-reflection, or take the family out for an adventure in the forest, don’t forget to take a hike on this November 17th and enjoy the great outdoors! Stay safe out there!

The Wisdom Tree

November 5, 2014 — Leave a comment

Visit the Wisdom Tree at Griffith Park for a short hike with epic views. Watch the sun set, the city lights come up, and the moon and stars come out. The summit boasts a 360 degree view and single tree visible from the surrounding trails and peaks.

To get to the trailhead and avoid the maze of Hollywood Hills roads take Lake Hollywood Drive from Barham Blvd. Follow this road through the neighborhood until you see Wonder View Drive heading east. You can’t park on Wonder View, but there’s plenty of free parking on Lake Hollywood. No passes or permits needed (although there’s no parking between 9:00 pm and 6:00 am every night).

map

Park along Lake Hollywood Drive and begin your hike heading east up Wonder View Drive. The road ends at a gate and then you’ll continue a short distance on a dirt road.

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 11.34.16 PM

You’ll pass a water tower to the left and a power line tower straight ahead. Wonder View Drive continues and a single-track trail splits off to the right. Head up this trail.

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 11.37.20 PM

You’ll see a prominent, newly-placed plaque commemorating the land’s protection and listing off some of the donors who chipped in to save it. The trail begins here and really doesn’t waste any time in starting its climb.

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 11.37.28 PM

The trail is easy to follow but there are several rugged areas with pretty steep drop-offs. The dirt is your usual, loose San Gabriel slick, so take your time on the descent to prevent slips.

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 11.38.14 PM

You’ll ascend almost the entire gain of the trail before you even hit the first mile mark – it’s about 743 feet of gain in 0.78 miles. But while you’re hiking up you’ll have amazing views of Griffith Park.

If it’s clear, you’ll also be able to see downtown Los Angeles and the Griffith Park Observatory sneaking out from behind the front range.

As you approach the top of the ridge, the trail splits and makes a sharp turn to the east on a ridge towards the Cahuenga Peak and a sharp turn to the west towards the Wisdom Tree.

There’s a short spur trail that will take you to the ledge, where you’ll find shade, amazing views, and a fun geocaching with messages.

Don’t miss an epic sunset at the Wisdom Tree!

Haunted Hollywood Sports

September 29, 2014 — Leave a comment

Haunted Hollywood Sports is a terrifying Halloween event in Southern California-based at Hollywood Sports Park, located in the city of Bellflower. Continuing its reign for its third year, offering extended interactive mazes, adrenaline pumping interactive killhouses where you shoot the monsters, terrifying scarezones, and many other sideshows and side attractions.

You shoot, they don’t. Haunted Hollywood Sports has two Killhouses and one Shoothouse for 2014; the famous nerve-wrecking “Zombie Killhouse”, the cajun themed “Voodoo Killhouse” and the all new “Last Stand Shoothouse”. What makes a Killhouse different from a regular walk-through maze is that, instead of simply walking through, defenseless against the terrors throughout, they immerse you into a storyline, arm you with a loaded Airsoft/Paintball gun that you can use to defend yourself against any of the monsters roaming each Killhouse. That’s right, for just a small additional fee per play, we give you the chance to actually shoot the attacking monsters. These Killhouses are extremely intense, can get physical, and not for the weak of heart. And no, the monsters wont be able to shoot back.

Wait, so what is this Shoothouse? A shoothouse is a mix between their signature Killhouses mixed with a shooting gallery…or for a better description, a real-life zombie defense scenario where you must defend your safehouse from the onslaught of zombies!
