The Harlem Globetrotters

February 11, 2013 — Leave a comment

The Harlem Globetrotters return to Los Angeles for another action packed game of street basketball at the Staples Center and Honda Center! They are an exhibition basketball team that combines athleticism, theater, and comedy. The acts often feature incredible coordination and skillful handling of one or more basketballs, such as passing or juggling balls between players, balancing or spinning balls on their fingertips, and making unusual, difficult shots.

The Globetrotters started in Chicago, Illinois in the 1920s, where a 24-year-old businessman named Abe Saperstein formed a small basketball team called the Savoy Big Five. He was just trying to promote a nightclub called the Savoy Ballroom, but in just a few years the team had played over 1,000 games around the country and become the Harlem Globetrotters.

They decided to pick Harlem as their home city since Harlem was considered the center of African-American culture at the time, and an out-of-town team name would give the team more of a mystique. The Globetrotters were initially a serious competitive team, and despite a flair for entertainment, they would only clown for the audience after establishing a safe lead in the game.

In 1941, the Globetrotters signed Reece “Goose” Tatum, an all-time great who developed amazing comedy moves and changed the direction of the team. By the end of the war the Globetrotters had played an incredible 30,000 games (losing only 2190) and were featured on the cover of Life magazine. Those were remarkable achievements at a time when America was deeply segregated by race. The team toured the world, breaking cultural and social barriers along with basketball records. They were the first team to play basketball in Europe.

The Globetrotters have appeared in their own movies and TV shows and have been seen by hundreds of millions of people in 120 countries. They are simply the most famous basketball team in the world.

Mr. Events.

Right this way, ladies and gentlemen, right this way! Don’t be afraid to step right up, the circus is in town and you’d be a clown to miss it! That’s right, the circus, and this show is far more then a common traveling company of performers. I attended this past weekend and it was a captivating spectacle that only Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey could deliver. The show had me on the edge of my seat and my eyes peeled wide open trying to keep track of all the breath taking entertainment. The circus has truly come a long way from traditional acts to include death defying stunts and elegant performances that had everyone screaming lions, tigers, and dragons! This really was The Greatest Show On Earth!

Their brand new show Dragons brings together tribes from the far reaches of the earth that are brought together in a single performance, displaying their breathtaking skills in a circus tournament of champions. Each tribe must prove that they have virtues of Courage, Strength, Wisdom, and Heart to arouse dragons which appear right before your very eyes!

Some of my favorite acts included the animals, that ranged from small cats to majestic lions and tigers, from comedic dogs to beautiful elephants. Here you can see an elegant act involving horses where you can see the incredible riding skills the performers have mastered.

Their new show Dragons has a far East theme and is filled with entertaining acts that tell a story throughout the show. Here you can see a martial arts expert jump through a ring of blades set on fire. The performers also display amazing feats of strength through mind, body, and spirit.

So, if you’re looking for live and in your face entertainment, look no further. The show is for all ages and is a great way to bring friends and family together. Book your tickets now, you don’t want to miss the big top in a town near you!

The Van Halen Tour

May 28, 2012 — 4 Comments

A regrouped Van Halen has announced an extensive 2012 American tour that will carry the four-piece rock band across the country over five months, including Los Angeles at the Staples Center in downtown and at the Honda Center in Anaheim. The band, featuring David Lee Roth, Eddie Van Halen, Alex Van Halen, and Eddie’s son Wolfgang Van Halen, will be touring in support of a new studio album called “A Different Kind of Truth.”

After performing at the world famous Cafe Wha? January 5th in New York City to announce their upcoming world tour, fans and followers posted videos and photos of the band’s unique first show opening. The album is Van Halen‘s first original studio album with singer David Lee Roth since the band’s diamond certified album 1984.

The band, which sprung from Pasadena in the 1970s and paid its dues on the Sunset Strip, rose in the late 1970s and ’80s to be one of the biggest rock bands in the world. After Roth left the band in 1985, Sammy Hagar took over vocal duties, followed by a brief stint in the ’90s with Gary Cherone. Roth reunited with the band — which by then had replaced longtime bassist Michael Anthony with Eddie’s Van Halen son Wolfgang — in 2008 for a troubled tour that ended with Eddie Van Halen in rehab.

Van Halen’s new single, “Tattoo” has been played on more than 160 stations since its release on January 10th. It held the positions of #1 on Billboard’s Hard Rock Singles chart,  #1 Most Played Song at Classic Rock Radio in its first week and  #1 Most Added song at Mainstream and Active Rock Radio. Listen to the song and watch the music video below.
