Archives For United States

The new exhibition Becoming Los Angeles opened July 14. This 14,000-square-foot masterpiece is the largest in the Natural History Museum. It tells stories in six major sections: Los Angeles and the region at the time of Spanish contact; the Spanish Mission Era; the Mexican Rancho Era; the early American Period; the emergence of a new American city in the late 19th and early 20th centuries; the Great Depression and World War II, to the present.

Some of the stories are well-known, such as how the acquisition of water through the Los Angeles Aqueduct in 1913 allowed Los Angeles to grow. But there are other natural and human influences that might surprise you: how cattle, the Gold Rush, floods, a plague of grasshoppers, railroads, and outlandish booster campaigns all played a part in transforming the region into an agricultural and industrial empire; the pivotal role Los Angeles played in World War II; and the dynamic diversity of the earliest settlers.

Rancho Era

Come meet L.A.’s Native Americans, colonists, and settlers; rancheros, citrus growers and oil barons; captains of industry, boosters, and radicals; filmmakers, innovators, and more!

They are transforming all decks of the ship into a ‘time machine,’ with each new era marked by a change in music and programming. Guests will reminisce Independence Day in bygone eras while still being able to enjoy today’s popular music and entertainment. Fun for the whole family.

Beginning at noon, the iconic Long Beach attraction will throwback to the last century with a take on The Golden Age, which coincides with the ‘hey-day of transatlantic travel.’ This period is of special significance to The Queen Mary which embarked upon its Maiden Voyage during the 1930s. Amusement and entertainment will include a stilt-walking Uncle Sam, Bingo and golden era games and characters, the Lil’ Big Band, a barbershop quartet, and will conclude with the not-to-be-missed California Foot Stompers.

The mid-century celebration kicks up its heels with vintage games and entertainment from the Andrew Sisters to the Pointer Sisters, concluding with a Beatles Tribute Band. Popular area DJs will spin Disco grooves and tail-shakers from the 70s, 80s and 90s, while date-appropriate games, amusements, libations, and treats are served up. The session concludes with the Mike Vitale Band performing favorites of the period.

The festive spirit of activities, touring, dining, shopping, and dancing will crescendo with one of the most highly touted 4th of July Firework displays in Southern California. And bringing the Independence Day celebration to close, guests can exercise their freedom of choice to wind down with a patriotic movie under the stars on the open air Sports Deck or to rev up under the musical spell of local DJs.

Brian Setzer is one of those wild geniuses who keeps the Earth properly spinning on its axis – a consistent institution who you can count on while pretty much everything else comes and goes. If nothing else, he might be saving American history from the scorch of its own warped magnifying glass memory. Dont’ miss Brian’s holiday smash Christmas Rocks! Extravaganza!

10

We’ve screwed up the 50’s – reduced it into one giant goof cartoon of crummy over-fattening food, leather jackets, and endless sock hops. And the 80’s showed up more or less mangled on arrival. But Brian Setzer, a punk rocker grinning across a gorgeous Gretsch splashed through the neon of the 80’s scene with a sound that channeled the earliest primal yelps of rock n’ roll. Then in the 90’s when every guy within a fedora’s throw of Hollywood wanted to form a swing band, Setzer massed a bloody orchestra and launched a blistering assault on all the zoot-suited mannequins cruising the scene. With an astonishing consistency and quality of output, an honest reverence for the American musical tradition and an idiosyncratic swagger that is itself the kind of brand that defies all contrivance, Brian’s on that short list alongside guys like Billy Gibbons, Jeff Beck, or, hell, Hendrix who inhabit their own crazy little islands where the waves around them may change direction but the guitar licks are scorching, the drinks stay cold, and the circle remains unbroken.
