The Venice Canal Historic District is a district in the Venice section of Los Angeles just two blocks east of the Pacific Ocean. The district is noteworthy for its enclave of homes built around six slim man-made canals where residents and ducks paddle by.

venice-beach-canals

The canals were built in 1905 by developer and tobacco millionaire Abbot Kinney, an asthmatic, entrepreneurial dreamer who won the land in a coin toss as part of his Venice of America plan.

Now a quaint upscale neighborhood, fully restored and remodeled homes make it a postcard scene along the canal shores. Facing the water, the houses are a collection of architectural styles; everything from mid-century modern to storybook cottage, to Roman-inspired villa.

The beautifully lit canals with gondoliers and arched bridges drew widespread publicity and helped sell lots in the development. However, as the automobile gained in popularity, the canals were viewed by many as outdated, and the bulk of the canals were filled in 1929 to create roads.

The original 16 miles of canals were dug in 1904 under the direction of Abbot Kinney. Man and mule worked around the clock to dig the canals in time for the grand opening of Venice on July 4, 1905.

Kinney was displeased with the progress so he deployed steam dredging equipment to complete the canals on time.

Kinney sought to recreate the appearance and feel of Venice, Italy in Southern California. The canals are roughly bounded by Eastern Court on the east, Court A on the south, Strongs Drive on the west, and Court E on the north. There are four east-west canals: Carroll Canal, Linnie Canal, Howland Canal, and Sherman Canal, and two north-south canals: Eastern Canal and Grand Canal.

By 1940, the remaining canals had fallen into disrepair, and the sidewalks were condemned by the city. The canal district remained in poor condition for more than 40 years, as numerous proposals to renovate the canals failed due to lack of funding, environmental concerns, and disputes as to who should bear the financial responsibility.

16.Venice.Canals

The canals were finally renovated in 1992, with the canals being drained and new sidewalks and walls. The canals re-opened in 1993 and have become a desirable and expensive residential section of the city.

Venice has long been a destination for Southern California locals and tourists alike. Many have visited but not all have explored the many secrets and traditions that characterize this little beach community. One such tradition is First Fridays, held on the first Friday of every month where the unique collection of businesses along Abbot Kinney Boulevard stay open late. As you stroll down the sidewalk, there are art galleries, eclectic boutiques, and trendy restaurants filled with lively crowds.

First Fridays is an excellent way for Venice locals and others to get to know shop owners in a festive and gracious atmosphere. The street is named after the founder of Venice California, Abbot Kinney, who wanted to create Venice as a cultural center and modeled the city after Venice, Italy over a century ago. Now Abbot Kinney Boulevard is the go-to place for late night dining, cool bars, and independent shops with an attitude.

A big part of the event are the food trucks. You will see them parked along the street. These trucks serve great gourmet food at great prices and are not to be mistaken for the catering trucks you see at construction sites. There is a truck from the Border Grill as well as the Gastrobus, which serves a delicious pulled pork sandwich along with other tasty dishes.

There is plenty of good entertainment with many stores and galleries hosting live bands. Not only do you hear great music, but many of the  establishments also serve free snacks. Make sure to add First Fridays to your social calendar for a friendly and entertaining evening on Abbot Kinney in Venice.

Venice, Italy is the ultimate romantic getaway, but you can experience a piece of the same charm and culture right here in Los Angeles.

Gondola Getaway is a romantic and entertaining ride on a custom Gondola that cruises through the waterways of Naples Island in Long Beach and is great for couples looking for a romantic date on Valentine’s Day. The ride includes food, snacks, fruit, and allows you to bring your own Champaign, wine, beer or any refreshment on board. Established in 1982, the authentic and original Gondola Getaway brings old world charm and thousand-year old tradition to Southern California. Authentic Venetian gondolas gently cruise the enchanting canals and waterways of Naples Island.

Valentines’s Day:

If you want to do something different this year, get on the water. The Gondola Getaway offers a relaxing and romantic cruise; a great way to spend the holiday with your loved one. All Valentine packages include an hour-long cruise through the canals of Naples Island, a long stem rose, antipasto or chocolate strawberries and a framed photograph. Que romantica!

Other getaways include:

The Ultimate Pizza Gondola Experience

Not even in Venezia, Italia can you board your own private gondola with a table set for up to 12 with flatware, glassware, and tablecloth. Your floating pizzeria will include your choice of pizza freshly delivered from the award-winning Dominicos ristorante along with their locally world-famous salad and garlic bread. Two Venetian trained Gondoliers will row you and your guests for an hour while you enjoy the sights and the flavors of this one and only Pizza/Gondola experience at the best floating table in Long Beach. Buon appetito!

Brunch on a boat

The ultimate family style Italian brunch! Italians love a meal with friends at a table, and Venetians love a meal with friends while floating on the lagoon. The Gondola Getaway offers another great food experience on board their large Gondola. You will cruise the canals and waterways and dine on an incredible array of Antipasti including Italian meats and cheeses, grilled vegetables, Italian breads, pasta salads, and much more. You can also bring the champagne and they will supply the peach nectar for you to mix the famous Bellini’s. Salute!

Message in a bottle

This unique service is perfect for any occasion from a birthday to a proposal or even just making a date night that much more special. You can pick a message from their options or email them exactly what you want to say. Your Gondolier will print your message on parchment paper, roll it up and place it in a wine bottle and cork it and have it ready upon your arrival. Included inside of the bottle are sand and small colorful sea shells to help best emulate a feeling of a “bottle washed ashore.” Your gondolier will drop it in the water about half way through the cruise and then expertly spin the gondola around so the bottle drifts up next to the boat and your date. Ti amo!

For more information watch a video on the Gondola Getaway here.

So, if you would like to spend this Valentine’s Day in Venice but can’t afford the trip or don’t have the time, relax and book your gondola getaway here.
