War Horse

War Horse is a remarkable story of courage, loyalty and friendship. Inspired by Michael Morpurgo’s novel and brought to life with Handspring Puppet Company’s life-size horse puppets, War Horse takes you on an emotional journey through World War I through the eyes of Joey — a horse — and his boy Albert. Experience the horror and universal suffering of war throughout this breathtaking storytelling masterpiece that brings you onto the battlefield and into the trenches.

England, 1914. As World War I begins, Joey is sold to the cavalry and shipped from England to France. He’s soon caught up in enemy fire, and fate takes him on an extraordinary journey, before finding himself alone in no man’s land. But Albert cannot forget Joey and he embarks on a treacherous mission to find him and bring him home.

You’ve never seen anything quite like War Horse. This epic tale is both a highly inventive spectacle and a powerfully moving drama, with one of the largest casts (over 30) ever assembled on the Ahmanson stage.

The horses in this amazing piece of theatre are life-size and life-like: crafted in cane, steel, leather and aircraft cables, by the extraordinary Handspring Puppet Company of South Africa, they embody the fire, spirit and nobility of living, breathing steeds.

Designer Rae Smith believes that the collaboration and creativity needed to bring War Horse to the stage is the opposite of the destruction of war, saying “theatre builds things…it’s about making something together and then looking at it, talking about it, and doing it again.”
